The Hook
An invitation arrives however it must: a black-lacquered token pressed into the party's hands by a stranger who then vanishes, a debt called in, a rumor chased down at the docks. All it says is SUNKEN PORT, DAWN OF THE LONG TIDE, SPEAK THE WORD 'CONCORD.' Those who go find seventy-two other hopefuls, a barge with no visible captain, and a smiling old woman named Chief Examiner Rathmoor Cade who informs them all, cheerfully, that most of them will not be Hunters by the week's end — and that a few of them, this year, will not survive to fail.
