The Hook
Nine in ten people are born with a Gift. You weren't one of them. Tonight you failed your third and final Provisional Trial at Meridian Crown Academy — no Gift, no license track, no future as a champion — and you're sitting in the rain behind the Gymnasium Array when Solace Kestrel, the Steadfast, the greatest hero alive, drops out of the sky in front of you coughing blood into a handkerchief. 'I've been dying for two years,' she says, like it's small talk, 'and I have something that's going to kill you slower.' She presses a shard of cold, star-bright light into your sternum. It sinks into your bones like it's always belonged there. 'It's called Starfall. It isn't really a Gift — it's a debt I've been carrying. Use it and it will break you. Don't use it and someone worse than me will come looking for it.' Then she's gone, and your hand is glowing, and you have six days before the make-up trials decide whether you have any place at this academy at all.
